During my residency, even though it consumed most of my time, I did find time to photograph. We lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and I would go to either the mountains or up the coast. Point Reyes was a favorite destination. I had my view camera with me this day when I spotted these elk. I remember at first thinking I wish I had my Nikon, because you can't photograph wildlife with a view camera. But then I thought why not give it a try. I walked through a draw that brought me to a small hillock overlooking them. The ocean in the background was obscured by the fog. They didn't stir, which amazed me. Setting up a view camera is a cumbersome process and I felt sure they would move, but they didn't. They allowed me to make several exposures and I will be forever grateful.
